WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), the ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELPegislation to help ensure that workplace safety remains a top priority for all workers in the United States.
In response to the Department of Labor's final rule, Senator Cassidy expressed his concerns about the potential implications of allowing outside union officials to participate in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workplace inspections. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of OSHA inspections and preventing them from being used to advance political agendas rather than prioritizing worker safety.
Senator Cassidy stated, “OSHA inspections are crucial to protect workers’ safety and should never be co-opted to promote a political agenda.” He further highlighted the imbalance that could arise from granting unions the authority to influence inspections in non-unionized workplaces, stating, “The union has a vested interest in harassing a non-union employer. Giving them the power to influence an inspection is a potential weapon against a workplace that has chosen to be non-union. This is wrong.”
The Senator's remarks underscore the critical need to uphold the neutrality and objectivity of workplace safety inspections, ensuring that they serve the primary purpose of safeguarding the well-being of all workers, regardless of their union affiliation.
