Senator Bernie Sanders has expressed grave concerns regarding the potential impacts of a Republican reconciliation bill, dubbed Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which is currently under consideration. According to recent findings from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, if enacted, this legislation could result in over 51,000 additional American deaths annually.
In his statement, Sanders criticized the proposed bill for its significant cuts to Medicaid and its provisions for substantial tax breaks for billionaires. He described it as not only poor public policy but also “a death sentence for struggling Americans.” Sanders emphasized that these findings are based on expert analysis rather than personal opinion.
The letter received by Sanders from the Yale School of Public Health and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics outlines several key factors contributing to the projected increase in mortality. These include loss of health coverage due to Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA) changes, reduced subsidies affecting low-income seniors’ prescription drug costs, elimination of safe staffing requirements in nursing homes, and failure to extend ACA coverage tax credits.
Sanders reiterated his commitment to opposing this bill in his capacity as Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. He argued that instead of stripping healthcare from millions to benefit billionaires with tax breaks, healthcare should be guaranteed as a human right in the United States.
