U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, has issued a statement regarding President Biden's nomination of Deva Kyle for the position of director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC). The nomination seeks to fill the vacancy created by the completion of the prior director's five-year term. Cassidy is advocating for a HELP Committee hearing to evaluate the nomination.
“The PBGC needs a director who has a concrete plan to right the ship and will be unaffected by partisan politics,” stated Dr. Cassidy. “Given the PBGC’s historic shortcomings, it is important the HELP Committee hold a thorough review process and a confirmation hearing for this nominee.”
Earlier in the week, Cassidy expressed concerns to President Biden about PBGC's current state. He highlighted that PBGC had mismanaged aspects of Democrats’ 2021 pension bailout, notably overpaying $127 million to the Central States Pension Fund after it included 3,479 deceased participants in their bailout request. Additionally, PBGC has faced public criticism for delays in providing technical assistance to pension plans experiencing significant financial issues.
