WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a statement following his vote to oppose the Democrats' "Right to Contraception Act." The legislation has been criticized for its broad scope, which Cassidy argues promotes chemical abortion drugs and disregards the conscience rights of medical professionals.

"The Democrats are using their power to push an alarmist and false narrative that there is a problem accessing contraception," said Dr. Cassidy. "There is no state or territory that bans access to birth control. Democrats know this, but misleading and scaring voters seems to be the only means they think they have to get voters to support them this election."

"This is a political stunt designed to fearmonger and mislead the public in an attempt to sway voters in an election year. Republicans should not play along," continued Dr. Cassidy.

Cassidy noted that multiple Supreme Court decisions have established clear protections for commonly used contraception like birth control pills.

Before the vote, Cassidy delivered a floor speech highlighting what he sees as serious issues with the Democrats' legislation, including its promotion of access to chemical abortion drugs and explicit elimination of conscience protections for health care providers under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
