Jefferson Parish Receives 2022 Environmental Leadership Program Municipality Achievement Award In Pollution Prevention

37

JEFFERSON, LA – The Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs has received the 2022 Environmental Leadership Program Municipality Achievement Award in Pollution Prevention from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ).

The LDEQ recognized the Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental  Affairs’ achievement in educating local owners and operators of  industrial and high-risk facilities about how to reduce storm water  pollution and comply with environmental regulations through its  Environmental Stewardship Program. Through the program, the department  established an identification criteria and scoring process to select  recipients of the Environmental Stewardship Awards. The awards recognize  industries and businesses in Jefferson Parish that demonstrate  environmentally friendly storm water practices and lead the community by  example.

“Jefferson Parish continues to launch storm water outreach programs  to educate the public and businesses about what they can do to prevent  pollution and keep our local waterways clean,” said Jefferson Parish  Department of Environmental Affairs Storm Water Management Supervisor  Sami Khalil. “We are proud of these award-winning programs, which use a  variety of different outreach efforts to increase public awareness of  the environmental consequences related to specific activities that  contribute to storm water pollution.”

The Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) was established in 1995 as  a voluntary cooperative effort between the Louisiana Department of  Environmental Quality and various Louisiana industries to promote  pollution prevention and other efforts, in the pursuit of environmental  excellence and leadership. At the awards ceremony, held June 9, 2022 in  Baton Rouge, members of the ELP were commended for their voluntary  pollution prevention efforts, community environmental outreach  initiatives, environmental ordinances and enforcement and environmental  management systems that went above and beyond regulatory compliance to  improve the environment.
