U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, addressed the issue of obesity during a recent hearing on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulation of American food.
In his prepared remarks, Cassidy highlighted that “nearly one in three Americans live with obesity, including 14 million children,” linking it to chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes. He noted the significant financial impact of obesity, which leads to “$173 billion in health care spending per year.”
Cassidy emphasized the need for solutions focusing on the nation’s food supply and dietary changes over decades. Citing a study from the Annals of Internal Medicine, he mentioned that “37 percent of adults consume an unhealthy diet.” He stressed that reducing obesity is a bipartisan concern and expressed eagerness to work with President Trump and colleagues to develop policies enhancing public health.
The hearing included discussions on FDA’s plan for mandatory front-of-package labeling. Cassidy remarked on the timing of the hearing before a formal proposal from FDA but acknowledged its importance. He cautioned against viewing labeling reforms as comprehensive solutions to health issues and urged consideration of all factors contributing to obesity.
He also called for FDA scrutiny on chemical safety in foods and advocated for increased congressional support for scientific research on food ingredients. Additionally, Cassidy expressed interest in FDA’s progress under challenges faced during the Biden-Harris administration, such as the 2022 infant formula shortage.
Highlighting another area of concern, Cassidy criticized NIH’s underfunding of nutrition and obesity research despite its significant health impacts. He intends to address this issue as chair of HELP Committee alongside President Trump’s administration.
Concluding his remarks, Cassidy thanked witnesses for their participation and anticipated productive discussions aimed at improving national health.
