Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, along with other legislators and workers, have revealed plans for a press conference aimed at introducing the Raise the Wage Act. This legislative effort is intended to increase the federal minimum wage to $17 by 2030.
The press event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, at the Senate Swamp. It will be accessible to the public via a livestream on Senator Sanders’ social media channels.
Together with Senator Sanders and Representative Scott, Representative Greg Casar and Service Employees International Union President April Verrett will also participate. Food service and airport workers will attend to support this initiative.
“The Raise the Wage Act will ensure American workers make a living wage, drive economic growth, and reduce income inequality,” according to the announcement. The proposed legislation is set to phase in the wage increase over five years. It also seeks to gradually eliminate subminimum wages for specific groups including tipped workers, workers with disabilities, and youth workers.
