Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, along with ten other senators, has sent a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon regarding the Trump administration’s decision to pause student loan forgiveness under the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan. The senators expressed concern about the impact on borrowers who have been repaying their loans for over 20 years and now face financial uncertainty.
The group of senators includes Mazie Hirono, Elizabeth Warren, Tim Kaine, Jeff Merkley, Peter Welch, Ron Wyden, Richard Blumenthal, Alex Padilla, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Jack Reed.
“At a time when Americans across the country are struggling to meet the costs of health care, food, housing, child care and other basic needs, it is unacceptable for the Trump administration to take any action that delays or denies legally mandated debt relief to borrowers that have been in repayment for two decades or more,” wrote Sanders and the senators.
The administration’s decision in July to halt forgiveness for IBR plan participants was made without notifying affected borrowers or Congress. This move has caused confusion among those who have consistently made payments and qualified for relief under existing law. The lack of clear communication from the Education Department means that some borrowers could miss out on assistance they are entitled to or face increased tax liabilities in the coming year.
The IBR plan currently covers about 3 million borrowers. Congressional offices report being misled by the department and note that no timeline has been given for when forgiveness might resume.
“The department should not require borrowers who have fulfilled their legal repayment obligations to continue paying with no guarantee or timeline for relief,” concluded Sanders and the senators.
This action follows other Republican-led measures affecting student loan policy. In June, Congress passed legislation referred to as Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which would increase average student loan payments and raise college costs for working families nationwide.
