Senator Bernie Sanders, along with Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell, will hold a press conference to introduce the Medicare for All Act. Joining them will be nurses, healthcare providers, and workers from across the nation. The event will take place on Tuesday at Upper Senate Park in Washington, D.C., and will also be livestreamed on Sanders’ social media platforms.
The proposed legislation aims to establish a comprehensive healthcare system, providing coverage for all Americans without premiums, co-payments, or deductibles. It also seeks to expand Medicare to include dental, hearing, and vision care. Supporters argue that the plan allows individuals to choose their doctors freely, eliminates excessive paperwork, and removes the need to negotiate with insurance companies. Citing a Congressional Budget Office estimation, advocates claim it could save the U.S. healthcare system $650 billion annually, while research from Yale University suggests it could save 68,000 lives each year.
Sanders emphasized the importance of healthcare as a human right, not a privilege, stating, “The American people understand, as I do, that health care is a human right, not a privilege and that we must end the international embarrassment of the United States being the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all of its citizens.” He added, “In America, your health and your longevity should not be dependent on your wealth. Health care is a human right that all Americans, regardless of income, are entitled to and they deserve the best health care that our country can provide.”
The initiative also addresses the significant profits of healthcare companies in recent years, highlighting that the top U.S. healthcare companies have spent a vast majority of their profits since 2001 on enriching executives and shareholders, rather than improving health outcomes. Last year alone, top pharmaceutical companies made $102 billion in profits, with executives from companies like Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, and Merck collectively earning over $100 million.
Details about the press conference reveal it is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET on April 29. Members of the press are invited to attend and should RSVP via the provided email address.
