Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has expressed his concerns following the recent announcement by Elon Musk and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about significant staff reductions at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The proposed plan involves terminating approximately 10,000 employees who are dedicated to enhancing the health outcomes of American families.
Sanders, serving as the Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, criticized the move, stating: “Let’s be clear: Arbitrarily firing over 10,000 workers at the Department of Health and Human Services will not make Americans healthier. It will make Americans sicker and less secure.”
He further elaborated on the potential impact, noting the current challenges faced by Americans in affording health insurance and prescription drugs. Sanders highlighted the difficulty these cuts would pose for seniors seeking medical care and 32 million Americans needing primary care at community health centers. He also emphasized the potential exacerbation of the existing childcare cost crisis, asserting that the cuts would worsen an already problematic situation.
Sanders reinforced his commitment to reversing the cuts, stressing the importance of making healthcare a universal right in the United States: “As the Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, I will do everything I can to reverse these disastrous cuts and finally make health care in America a human right for all, not a privilege.”
